SpinSheet Launches New Sailor Program, Start Sailing Now

SpinSheet, the Chesapeake Bay sailing magazine is debuting in April its free new sailor guide, Start Sailing Now.

For more than a decade, would-be sailors and newcomers to the Bay have turned to SpinSheet for advice on how to get into the sport. New sailor inquiries light up the magazine’s phone lines; their clicks keep SpinSheet’s free online Crew Listing service alive and thriving. Last spring, more than 300 sailors mingled at the annual Crew Listing party.

“New sailors are hungry for information about how to get started and how to connect with boats, skippers, and the sailing life,” says editor Molly Winans. “We’ve always happily dished out as much information as we have from where to sit on the seawall to watch a Wednesday night race to what kind of shoes might trip you up on deck. We decided to put our cumulative wisdom down on paper and share it with a wider audience.”

Start Sailing Now is a free, 24-page guide to getting into sailing, from casual daysailing to racing, on the Chesapeake Bay. This jump-start program includes:

  • How to connect with sailing schools, clubs, and welcoming skippers
  • Learning the lingo of sailing
  • A list of must-have gear (and which pieces new sailors might already have in their backpacks or gym bags)
  • The school scene up and down the Bay and how to find a good fit
  • Popular Bay boats and sailing hot spots

Start Sailing Now is a free, stand-alone publication, set to be launched at SpinSheet’s annual Crew Listing party on April 20 and distributed at outdoor retail outlets, community festivals, and other hand-picked locations where potential sailors (such as active cyclists and hikers) look for regional event information. The full publication will also be available in late April at www.startsailingnow.com.
