In the News: 5th Annual Flip Flop Regatta in Boston Harbor Honors Alexandra Nicole Zapp

Sail America member Lori Gleason served on the volunteer race committee for the 5th Annual Flip Flop Regatta, held in the Boston Harbor Aug 10-11 to celebrate the life of her friend Alexandra “Ally” Nicole Zapp, whose love for the sailing community extended from her days volunteering at the CSS to her involvement with The America’s Cup.

In 2002, Zapp was brutally murdered by a repeat sex offender at a Massachusetts rest stop. Her mother, Andrea Casanova, founded The Ally Foundation in her memory to promote both strong community involvement and individual opportunities to join in the fight against sexual violence. All proceeds from the 5th Annual Flip Flop Regatta were donated to The Ally Foundation. On behalf of Sail America, Gleason presented Casanova with a donation to The Ally Foundation.

Since “Ally” loved both flip flops and sailing, her friends believed establishing the Flip Flop Regatta five years ago would be a fitting way to honor her and support The Ally Foundation. The regatta featured more than 60 yachts from across the Northeast and included jam-packed parties and fun-filled activities for sailors and landlubbers alike.
