Sailing Magazines Recognized at Boating Writers International Awards
Sailing magazines, including Cruising World, Sailing World and SAIL won a number of awards at the recent Boating Writers International Awards held at the Miami International Boat Show. In its 15th year, the contest attracted 200 participants submitting 521 entries. Cash awards were given in 16 categories for “excellence in creating compelling stories about the boating lifestyle through entertaining, educational, and inspiring journalism,” while Certificates of Merit were given to writers of an additional 38 articles.
Twelve Cruising World authors received 13 awards and certificates of merit. Cruising World was the recipient of more BWI awards than any other marine magazine, for a wide range of stories, both technical and inspirational. 1st place winners were: Technical Writing: Tom Linskey, “Final Exam,” July 2007; Boat Tests: Stacey Collins, “Rocket Takes Flight,” April 2007; Boating Travel or Destinations: Jim Carrier, “Arriving from the West,” November 2007; and Gear, Electronics and Product Test: Ed Sherman, “With Radar, the More Power the Better,” October 2007
Sailing World’s Michael Lovett won a Certificate of Merit for a June 2007 Sailing World story called “An Enviable Streak,” a profile of Elmer Richards, who has sailed at the Thistle Midwinters regatta for 50 straight years!
Three SAIL and BoatWorks writers were recognized for excellence in journalism.
SAIL Electronics Editor Ben Ellison took 1st in the “Electronics” category for “The Future of
NMEA 2000,” which takes a comprehensive look at why it's taken seven years for N2K to catch on (SAIL, February 2007).
SAIL’s Editor-in-Chief Peter Nielsen won 3rd place in the “Boating Travel or Destinations” category for “The End of The World,” his tale of adventure cruising the challenging waters of the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn (SAIL, November 2007). SAIL Senior Associate Editor Dave Baldwin was recognized with a Certificate of Merit in the “Boat/Engine Care and Maintenance” category for "Outboard Rebuild," his step-by-step story about bringing a seized outboard motor back to life (BoatWorks, Fall 2007).
