SAIL AMERICA PARTNERS WITH YACHTWORLD.COM ON REAL TIME SAILBOAT BROKERAGE SALES REPORT

In late June, Sail America Executive Director Jonathan Banks announced a new partnership with association member YachtWorld.com, in an effort to provide real time market research data to benefit its members.

“We are very pleased to introduce a new monthly report of sailboat brokerage sales, which allows our members to review each month’s sailboat brokerage sales, and track annual trends,” said Banks. “We are very fortunate to work with YachtWorld.com on this important initiative.”

According to YachtWorld Editorial Director John Burnham, the inaugural report indicates that sailboat sales have been slower nationally in 2009 than in 2008 and have been harder hit than power, likely due to the fact that the powerboat market was already depressed the previous year by other factors, including the high cost of fuel.

Burnham’s Analysis

“Through the end of June 2009, unit brokerage sales of sailboats are down by 29% compared with the same period in 2008. The collective valuation of boats that have been sold are off by 39% ($170 million vs. $279 million) compared with 2008.

While small-boat sales (under 26 feet) have been the only category down by less than 30 percent year to date (-17 percent), boats over 45 feet began to sell better in June. In June ’09, both large and small categories were slightly ahead of ’08 both in valuations and units sold.
