West Marine Announces New President, CEO – Matthew Hyde

West Marine has named Matthew Hyde as its new president and CEO. Hyde, a former vice president at outdoor retail chain REI, replaces Geoff Eisenberg officially on June 19, 2012.

“Matt brings a consistent history of growing sales and profits in the outdoor recreational field,” said Randy Repass, West Marine chairman. “His core values, in support of customer and associates, are the same as West Marine's. We are confident his strong skill set and extensive experience in areas that are key to West Marine's future have prepared him well to provide outstanding leadership."

Hyde was executive vice president at REI where he oversaw more than US$1.8 billion in annual sales and 10,000 employees. He was responsible for REI’s retail stores, e-commerce, marketing and real estate divisions, as well as for growing the firm’s private label brand.

Morris Yachts Opens Rhode Island Sales Office, Adds New Sales Experts

Morris Yachts will christen its newest M52 sailing yacht in Newport, R.I., to celebrate the opening of its new sales office there, joining other offices and service yards in Bass Harbor and Northeast Harbor, Maine. The company will maintain a small fleet at the new facility for boat demo and sales purposes.

"Our geographic footprint is expanding, and in order to continue our high-touch sales approach for which we are renowned, a sales office in a prominent global sailing hub like Newport was a logical next step,” said CEO Doug Metchick.

Joining the Morris sales team are three veteran industry professionals including Scott Dyer, previously sales manager for the North American operations of Sealegs amphibious boats, as well as with Protector Boats and Hinckley yachts. Gregg Weatherby is a Coast Guard captain, former national sales manager for True North Yachts, as well as a regional sales development manager for Pursuit and Tiara Yachts. Chad Thieken has been at the helm of the some of the world's finest sailing superyachts, including the J-Class Hanuman, Ethereal, Hyperion, Athena, and Marie for more than 15 years. Just returning from an apprenticeship with Dykstra Naval Architects in Amsterdam, he continues his design studies and was named a semi-finalist for Showboats Young Designer of the Year 2011. As an MCA Class IV/3000 GT captain with a degree in maritime business, he brings hands-on knowledge with global experience working with owners, designers and shipyards.

Offshore Sailing School Taps New Director of Operations

Kevin Wensley, a 12-year employee of Offshore Sailing School and most recently, the Southern Regional Manager, has been named Director of Operations. In his capacity, Wensley will manage all Offshore Sailing School programs and locations, working closely with the company's headquarters’ team in running the business.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Wensley became a U.S. Citizen in 2011. He was a member of Sir Chay Blyth’s BT Global Challenge management team and lived his love of sailing on thousands of blue water miles before settling down in SW Florida. He holds a US Coast Guard license, and US Sailing instructor certification.

Hunter Signs Two New US Dealers

Hunter has signed two new dealers, Simple Sailing Charter & Sales in St Petersburg, Florida, and Empire Yacht Sales in Fair Haven, New York.

“Empire Yachts is delighted to represent a value brand like Hunter Marine and there is no better time to align ourselves with the brand than during Hunter’s reorganizing process,” says Tim Feagans, owner, in a statement.

Hunter Marine, along with sister companies Luhrs and Mainship, are currently being bid on by different entities. Miami-based Tiger International Management became the “stalking-horse bidder” on June 6, according to federal bankruptcy court records.

Tiger International established a baseline bid for the assets of the three brands. Hunter Marine President John Peterson said in an earlier statement that other entities plan to bid for the assets before the bidding closes on the court-imposed deadline of July 3rd.
