EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S CORNER
Good News from Sail America
By Jonathan Banks
Sail America Executive Director
As we get ready for the upcoming Sailing Industry Conference and prepare for the 2010/2011 membership drive, I'm pleased to report that Sail America is healthier now than it’s been in many years. Although we experienced a small drop in membership this fiscal year, we had many other notable successes: a great Strictly Sail Pacific show in April; reduced expenses and overhead; exceeded sponsorship funds and goals for the Industry Conference; and continued strong partnerships with other show producers (e.g. NMMA and Show Management). Despite one of the worst years in the history of the marine industry, Sail America is forecast to actually make a small profit for our current fiscal year that ends in June.
Similar to many businesses in the sailing industry, Sail America has been “right-sized,” but we’ve done so without sacrificing any of the important programs and events we run, or by reducing the value we offer our members. In fact, we’ve added new member benefits, organized a fantastic Industry Conference, and made great progress with the Individual Membership program.
There has been overwhelming support for the Sailing Industry Conference, taking place in Annapolis on June 15 and 16. Thanks to our title sponsor Yanmar, and our presenting sponsors The Sailing Company, Gill, SAIL Magazine, Harken, GE Financial, YachtWorld.com and the United States Sailboat Show, along with our Donating Sponsors, Partner Sponsors and General Sponsors, we have organized an impressive line-up of speakers and events (Click Here for the full list of sponsors).
Attendees will gain valuable insights on all the elements that impact the future success of their businesses - consumer behavior, salesmanship, e-marketing, marine finance, management leadership, communications, and more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with industry peers, share best practices, and discuss the challenges of running a business in today’s tough environment.

The Sailing Industry Conference is just one of the many valuable services Sail America offers its members. Recent improvements to our membership benefits include up to 70% on less-than-truckload shipping with YRC and a 30% discount with any Sunsail or Moorings charter that is booked within 30 days of the departure date.
In the next few weeks, you will receive a membership renewal notice from Sail America. Your membership in Sail America is an investment in your business and in the future of the sailing industry. Thanks in advance for your commitment to sailing, and for what I hope will be your continued support of Sail America. We are here for you!
